The camels are loaded with straw (their food) as well as dried tomatoes, onions and indigo — all for barter when the caravan arrives at the salt oasis of Fachi. This camel bellows his misery in a full range of guttural octaves as we weigh him down for another day at the office at 6 a.m. An odd combination of dignity and wretched orneriness, these beasts of burden have every right to their pissy personalities.
