During the 16-hour days of pilgrimage, a concoction of millet, pungent goat cheese and berries is passed among the men and boys for sustenance. We drift off to sleep to the rhythms of the chief’s nine-year-old son pounding millet, and wake to them before the sun leaks out onto the day.
