There are only a few places where salt is found in the Sahara, so this essential mineral has been a large part of the trade in the region for millennia — as all living creatures need salt to survive. Tuareg Nomads — also known as the “Indigo Men” or “blue men of the desert” because of their indigo garb — transport the salt between oases with their camels.
