A young mother visits the shrine to La Senora Amelia Goyri at El Necrópolis Cristóbal Colón cemetery in Havana with her son, to give thanks for the cure of the baby’s illness. Mothers and expectant mothers visit the grave of Goyri and her child, who died during childbirth in 1901, to pray for health and leave tokens of faith. According to a public health official, Cuba’s 1999 rate of 6.4 infant mortalities per 1000 live births is the lowest in Latin America.
