Pramila Jayapal

Pramila Jayapal has been actively involved in international and domestic social justice issues for over twelve years. She is the founder of Hate Free Zone Washington, a grassroots nonprofit organization that was created in response to the backlash against immigrant communities of color. Jayapal was born in India, and raised in India, Indonesia and Singapore.  She was awarded a fellowship from the Institute of Current World Affairs to live in India and write about development and societal issues. From this her book Pilgrimage to India:  A Woman Revisits Her Homeland (Avalon) was born. It received critical acclaim on several continents and reached the bestseller lists in her homeland.

“It is a rare privilege to accompany Pramila Jayapal into the land of her birth.  With all her senses, a keen intelligence, and total integrity, she deftly interweaves her own life story, and never settles for easy answers as she moves through the contradictions of modern India.”
